this method only works on google contacts or other accounts if you have saved your contacts in your sim card or phone memory. you won't be able to add picture with that. for that you'll have to move all your contacts to google contacts

I can't seem to be able to add a photo to any of my contacts on my galaxy s4, is there a mode or setting on my phone so that I can put pictures on my contacts?

How do I add my photo to "MY INFO" so my photo comes up in the text messages? Right now it is there for a few minutes and then it's gone.

The above method only works for contacts that are on the phone only, it wont work on contacts on the sim - for me anyway on s4 - so just import contacts from sim to phone, then edit/add picture to contact, then export those edited contacts back to sim card, easy! ;)
