Finally Samsung announced officially the first device with a curved display, which is going to be released in Korea on October 10t (tomorrow): Galaxy Round
First let’s take a look at the General Specifications of Galaxy Round:
- 151.1 x 79.6 x 7.9mm, 154 grams
- 5.7 inches Super Flexible AMOLED
- 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD resolution)
- 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Karit CPU, Snapdragon 800
- 3GB of RAM
- 32GB of Internal Memory, expandable with microSD card slot
- 13MP / 2MP Rear and Front camera
- Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (Upgradable to KitKat 4.4?)
- 2800mAh Battery
As expected, Samsung used almost the same hardware pieces, as in the Galaxy Note 3, but the most distinguished and unique feature is for sure the Flexible Display. Considering the performance and benchmarks of Galaxy Note 3, we should expect almost the same from the Galaxy Round and for the record, Galaxy Round is the second phone with 3GB of RAM while Note3 is holding the first place. Speaking of picture and camera quality, it can record up to 1080p HD videos and the rear camera can capture stills with 13MP quality, while the front camera takes 2MP pictures. The back design of Galaxy Round is also exactly the same as the Note 3 with that stylish Leather finish.
Other than the usual software features available on the TouchWiz, Samsung added some new features to get the most out of this Curved display, such as Roll Effect, Gravity Effect, and Bounce UX. So, what are these features for?
Roll Effect: This feature lets you get informed about the time, date, missed calls and battery status, by rolling the phone over towards the other side (like a cradle) when the home screen is off.
Gravity Effect: This feature make it possible to create visual interaction with the screen, to get some information, by tilting the device.
Bounce UX: This feature is used to control the music player, and play the previous and next song bg tapping either side of the screen, even when the screen is off.
We are not sure whether these new features are really practical, or they are just confusing!
The Pricing and Availability
The phone will be available tomorrow on Korea, and you need to pay around $1013 USD to get the Luxury Brown version as the only color available at the moment. There is no news about the global release of Galaxy Round yet, but it is expected to be available soon world wide and with more colors to go.
Do we really need a phone with a curved display?
Since we haven't worked with the phone yet, we can not say for sure if this device with this curved display is really useful, or curved display devices are just at the beginning of the road and we should wait at least one more year to be able to get the most out of this new technology.
So, What do you thing about Galaxy Round?
