tawk.to review: free live chat and help desk software

tawk.to is live chat and help desk software that your business can use for free, with no limit on agents, chats or websites. Paid add-ons cover AI answers and removing the “Powered by tawk.to” branding, at $29 a month each, priced per property rather than per seat. You add the chat widget to your site with one snippet of code.

Quick verdict

If you want website chat, a shared inbox and tickets for a whole support team without paying per agent, tawk.to is free and its FAQ says there are no limits on agents, concurrent chats or sites. You pay only for extras: AI Assist and Whitelabel from $29 a month per property, with voice agents and data enrichment on a waitlist. The weak spot is the Android app, rated 3.8 stars, with 20.0% of ratings at 1 star. Many recent Android reviewers say notifications don’t arrive or come late. For a team that answers from phones, that means missed chats.

Features

These come from the home, add-ons, FAQ and security pages on tawk.to.

  • Live chat widget: a chat box for your website that you can style to match your brand, plus Chat Pages for a hosted chat link. Setup is one JavaScript snippet, and the home page says the widget is live in about 2 minutes.
  • Shared inbox: the home page shows chat, email, forms and voice in one inbox, with WhatsApp messages in its example.
  • Tickets: an enquiry that’s a problem becomes a ticket on the contact, with assignees, priorities and statuses.
  • CRM and pipeline: each conversation builds a contact record with organizations, segments and tags. A pipeline board moves deals or orders through stages, and an activity log tracks calls, notes, tasks and bookings.
  • Knowledge base and feedback: a help center for self-service, and an ideas portal where customers vote on requests that can become a public roadmap and changelog.
  • AI answers: the AI Assist add-on answers routine questions from your knowledge base and hands the chat to a person when needed. It has a forever-free tier for limited volume.
  • Hired help: the “Why free” page offers chat agents who answer for your business “for just $1 per hour”, and virtual assistants “from just $7/hr”.
  • Support: the FAQ promises live support by chat and email around the clock, every day of the year.
  • Data handling: the security page says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, chats and tickets stay on its servers until you delete them, and hosting runs on Google Cloud, AWS and Digital Ocean. It says tawk.to is self-certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and complies with GDPR. These are the vendor’s statements; we didn’t check them.

Plans and pricing

Plan Price Main additions
tawk.to (free) $0 Live chat, inbox, tickets, knowledge base, CRM and apps, with no limits on agents, chats or sites
AI Assist From $29/mo; free tier for limited volume AI agents and workflows that answer from your knowledge base
Whitelabel $29/mo per property Removes the tawk.to badge; runs the widget, Chat Page, Knowledge Base and emails on your own brand and domain
Voice Agents From $49/mo plus usage; free tier to build and test An AI voice agent on a real phone number (waitlist)
Data Enrichment From $59/mo, billed per property Identifies site visitors and fills in contact details (waitlist)

Add-ons are priced “per property, not per seat”, so adding agents doesn’t raise the bill. You need no credit card to start and can cancel any time, the add-ons page says, though the parts of it we could read don’t mention annual billing or refunds. According to the FAQ, the desktop and mobile apps are all free and paying to remove the branding is optional. One Android reviewer, in July 2025, says they pay €39 per month per user, which doesn’t match the per-property pricing on the add-ons page.

Mobile apps

The Android app is free with no ads, has 1,000,000+ downloads, and is version 3.11.3-RELEASE, updated October 15, 2026. Its listing says you can add websites and get widget code, get push notifications for new visitors, chat requests and messages, watch visitors move around your site and start a chat, message other agents, work on tickets, and send chat transcripts by email. The vendor’s site also lists iOS, macOS and Windows apps, but the data we collected has no App Store listing, so the app details here are for Android only.

Pros (from app reviews)

These come from Android reviews from the last two years. The reviews we read include more low ratings than the store as a whole, where 59.1% of ratings in the breakdown are 5 stars.

  • Running customer support: several use it for a business, such as a WooCommerce store, or to stay in touch with customers. One says it suits non-profits like libraries, and another has used it across several businesses for years.
  • Free: a few are glad it costs nothing. One, in April 2025, calls it a free support center “unlike stupid Zendesk”.
  • Easy to use: a few call it easy.

Cons (from app reviews)

  • Notifications: many say notifications don’t arrive, come late or make no sound, and several say they missed chats with customers because of it. Two say Do Not Disturb mode turns itself back on. A few others say an update changed the notification sound, in two cases to a gunshot.
  • Updates that break things: several say problems started after an update.
  • Missing messages and attachments: several say messages, email replies or customer images don’t show in the app. One, in December 2025, says the images appear on the web version but not in the app.
  • Replying: a few say they couldn’t type or send a reply, for example while the customer was typing.
  • Sign-outs: a few say the app logs them out, one of them every hour.
  • Support: a few say support didn’t help or didn’t answer a bug report.
  • Dark mode: two ask for one.

Who it’s for

A good fit if:

  • You want website chat and a ticketing inbox for a support team of any size without per-agent fees.
  • Your business runs several websites: the FAQ says there’s no limit on sites.
  • You’d like AI answers from your own knowledge base for $29 a month rather than per seat.
  • Your site runs on Shopify, WordPress or Squarespace and you want to add chat with one snippet.

Look elsewhere if:

  • Your agents answer mainly from Android phones and can’t afford missed chats: many app reviewers say notifications fail.
  • You don’t want “Powered by tawk.to” on your widget and won’t pay $29 a month per property to remove it.
  • You need prices on a published plan table with annual terms; the add-ons page shows monthly prices only.

FAQ

Is tawk.to really free?

Yes. The core live chat, inbox, tickets and apps cost nothing, and the FAQ says there are no limits on agents, chats or sites. You pay only for add-ons, such as Whitelabel at $29 a month per property or AI Assist from $29 a month.

How many agents can you add to tawk.to?

As many as you need. The FAQ says there’s no limit on agents per property, and each agent has their own account. Add-on prices are per property, so more agents don’t cost more.

How do you remove the tawk.to branding?

Buy the Whitelabel add-on, which costs $29 a month per property. It removes the badge and lets you run the widget, Chat Page, Knowledge Base and emails on your own brand and domain.

Does tawk.to have an AI chatbot?

Yes, as the AI Assist add-on. It answers from your knowledge base and hands off to a person when needed. There’s a forever-free tier for limited volume, and paid plans start at $29 a month.
