Matomo is web analytics software for tracking visitors, traffic sources, conversions and on-page behaviour on your websites. You can host it on your own servers (Matomo On-Premise) or use Matomo Cloud. The core is open source under the GNU General Public License v3 (or later) and free of charge, and the GDPR page says Cloud data is stored in Europe while On-Premise data stays in the country you choose. We couldn’t get current Cloud or On-Premise prices from the vendor’s site when we checked.
Quick verdict
Matomo suits a business that wants to own its analytics data. You can run the free, open-source core on your own servers, or use Matomo Cloud, which the GDPR page says keeps data in Europe with no transfer to the US. The features page lists standard reports plus heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing, funnels, a tag manager and a Google Analytics importer. It doesn’t say which of these are paid Premium Features on a self-hosted install. Pricing is harder to pin down. The support plans page shows no prices, so you’ll need the vendor’s pricing pages or its sales team. The free Android app has 4.3 stars from 2,512 ratings. Several recent app reviewers say it does the job, and two say it looks outdated.

Features
These come from the home, features, privacy, GDPR and free software pages on matomo.org. The features page doesn’t say which features come with the free core and which are paid Premium Features.
- Reports: visitors, behaviour, acquisition, multi attribution, goals, conversion tracking, funnel analysis, cohorts, ecommerce, SEO keywords, paid ads performance and media analytics. Custom reports let you choose from “over 200 dimensions and metrics”. Roll-up reporting combines data from multiple websites, mobile apps and shops into one account.
- Behaviour tools: heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics, and A/B testing and personalisation.
- AI traffic: AI traffic analytics separates human and AI traffic and compares AI referrals with other acquisition channels.
- Data collection: the home page lists unsampled data, first-party tracking, JavaScript and log analytics, raw data access and raw data export.
- Setup and integrations: the home page says you add one line of JavaScript or connect via WordPress, Google Tag Manager and “100+ integrations”. The features page lists Matomo’s own Tag Manager, a GA importer for historical Google Analytics data, and an API. The site footer links a WordPress Plugin and a Data Warehouse Connector.
- Privacy controls: cookieless tracking, data anonymisation and IP anonymisation, an opt-out for visitors, respect for Do Not Track, data retention settings for raw data and aggregated reports, shorter cookie expiry, and the option to disable the Visits Log and Visitor Profile. A GDPR Manager handles requests such as right of access, right to erasure and right to data portability, and can delete or anonymise historical data.
- Admin: access controls and audit logs (home page), and white label, which lets you brand the interface and reports as your own.
- Compliance claims: the privacy page says Matomo “can be configured to follow even the strictest of privacy laws”, naming GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, LGPD and PECR. It also says the French data protection authority (CNIL) approved Matomo as one of a select few web analytics tools exempt from tracking consent requirements; the GDPR page links a guide on configuring Matomo without tracking consent. The vendor says it is certified ISO 27001:2022 and runs a security bug bounty program. These are the vendor’s own claims.

The support plans page describes each bundle’s support but shows no prices, and we couldn’t get current Cloud or On-Premise prices from the vendor’s site when we checked. Check Matomo’s pricing pages or contact its sales team for a quote. On the home page, Matomo offers “a 21-day free Cloud trial, or self-host forever for free”, with “Full access to all features” and no credit card required. Support bundles have limits: custom development, third-party tool implementation and server administration work may require a separate custom support arrangement, says the support plans page.
Self-hosting and data location
The free software page says “Matomo core is available free of charge” and will “forever remain open-source”, under the GNU General Public License v3 (or later). It lists more than 50 public repositories on GitHub, including Matomo core, Matomo Analytics for WordPress, Matomo Tag Manager and the mobile app. Premium plugins are closed source; the page says they “are needed to fund open-source community”.
On where data lives, the GDPR page says Matomo Cloud stores your data in Europe and “no data is transferred to the US”, while with Matomo On-Premise the data is stored in your country of choice. When we checked, the site showed a banner about two high-severity PHP vulnerabilities and asked On-Premise and self-hosted users to review the recommended PHP security updates.
Mobile apps
The Android app is “Matomo Mobile – Web Analytics” (formerly Piwik Mobile). It’s version 2.7.0, updated October 5, 2026, first released December 15, 2013, with 50,000+ downloads. It’s free, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and the listing calls it “a project made by the community”. The listing says you can view your custom Matomo dashboards, manage multiple Matomo accounts, use an “All Websites” dashboard, choose any date, period and metric, view any available report (including reports from custom plugins), follow visitors in Real Time or in the Visitor Log, and use it in more than 50 languages. It needs Matomo/Piwik 2.0 or later with the ImageGraph plugin active. One limit matters for WordPress sites: the listing says it “Doesn’t work with Matomo for WordPress. Only Matomo On-Premise and Matomo Cloud.” On your phone, the app asks for full network access and to view Wi-Fi and network connections.
The free software page lists the mobile app’s code as “Matomo Mobile app for Android and iOS”, but our data has only the Google Play listing, so everything below is about the Android app.
Web vs. mobile apps
| Feature | Web | Android app | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real-time visitors | Yes (“See visitors in real time”) | Yes (Real Time and Visitor Log) | Home page, Google Play listing |
| Multiple websites in one view | Roll-up reporting | “All Websites” dashboard | Features page, Google Play listing |
| Heatmaps and session recordings | Yes | Not in the listing | Features page |
| Matomo for WordPress | WordPress Plugin (site footer) | Not supported, says the listing | Site footer, Google Play listing |
Pros (from app reviews)
These come from Android app reviews from the last two years; the newest review in our data is from September 2026. It’s a small sample, most of it 5-star, and none of these reviews has a developer reply.
- Does the job: several reviewers say the app works or does what they need. One says it connected to their self-hosted Matomo “without any problems”. One reviewer couldn’t work out how to log in (see the cons).
- Praise for the analytics product: a few app reviewers praise Matomo the analytics tool, beyond the app itself. One calls it an “exceptional open source analytics solution”, one says they switched from Google Analytics, and one likes that no cookie consent is needed.
Cons (from app reviews)
- Outdated look: two reviewers say the app looks outdated, though both still give it 3 stars or more. Another asks for a dark mode.
- Less detail: one says the gap between the app and the web version they self-host is big, and another wants more detailed data.
- Requests: one asks for a one-tap switch between dates instead of multi-step calendar navigation, and one wants to customize the dashboard and add gadgets.
- Log-in trouble: one 1-star reviewer with Matomo installed on a WordPress site asks how to log in to the app and says the docs don’t match the plugin’s interface. The listing says the app doesn’t work with Matomo for WordPress.

Who it’s for
A good fit if:
- You want to host analytics on your own servers: the core is free and open source under GPL v3 (or later).
- Your business needs data kept in Europe or in a country you pick: the GDPR page says Cloud stores data in Europe and On-Premise stores it in your country of choice.
- You’re leaving Google Analytics and want to keep your history: the features page lists a GA importer for historical data.
- You want heatmaps, session recordings, funnels and A/B testing in the same tool as your traffic reports.
- You run a larger rollout and want guided onboarding: the Enterprise Bundle includes a dedicated Customer Success Manager, and VIP / Custom adds a project manager for onboarding.
Look elsewhere if:
- You run Matomo for WordPress and want the phone app: the Android listing says it doesn’t work with Matomo for WordPress.
- Your team wants a modern-looking mobile app: two app reviewers call the design outdated.
- You expect a standard support bundle to cover custom development or administering your server for you: the support plans page says these may require a separate custom support arrangement.

How this review was put together
We did not test Matomo. This review is based on public information from official sources: the vendor’s own website (its features, pricing and policy pages) and, where the product has mobile apps, its Google Play and App Store listings, ratings and user reviews. Features, prices and claims are the vendor’s own descriptions; what users like and dislike comes from store reviews, when there are any. Everything was checked on November 4, 2026.
